A faster WordPress site ranks better, converts better and frustrates no one. You do not need to be a developer to make a real difference — here are seven changes that matter most, roughly in order of impact.
1. Host on fast NVMe storage
The single biggest factor is the server underneath. NVMe SSD storage and a modern web server (like LiteSpeed) dramatically cut the time to first byte. If your host still uses old spinning disks or oversold servers, no plugin will fully fix it.
2. Turn on server-level caching
Caching serves a ready-made copy of your pages instead of rebuilding them every visit. LiteSpeed Cache (free on OctaHost plans) is one of the most effective options and integrates directly with the server.
3. Optimise your images
Images are usually the heaviest part of a page. Resize them to the dimensions you actually display, compress them, and serve modern formats like WebP. An image-optimisation plugin can automate all of this.
4. Use a lightweight theme
Bloated, do-everything themes load code you never use. A lean theme (or a well-built block theme) gives you a faster baseline that is easier to keep quick.
5. Audit your plugins
Every active plugin adds weight. Deactivate and delete anything you are not using, and replace heavy plugins with lighter alternatives. Quality matters more than quantity.
6. Run a current PHP version
PHP 8.x is significantly faster than older versions. In cPanel you can switch your PHP version in a couple of clicks — just test your site afterwards to confirm everything is compatible.
7. Add a CDN and clean your database
A CDN serves static files from locations near your visitors, and clearing out old post revisions, spam and transients keeps your database lean. Together they trim the last bit of latency.
Make these changes one at a time and re-test, so you can see what helped. Most sites feel noticeably snappier after just the first three.
